ATHENS

GC-APPROVED

6 October, 2020

Thank God! You don’t have to get on a boat to escape the bustle of the Greek capital: Just a 30-50 minute drive- you’ll find a place where urban sprawl gives way to an impressive palm fringed setting.

To taste summer Athens, you’ll pass through Glyfada, Mikrolimano and Vouliagmeni and reach Sounio. Admire the natural beauty of the Vouliagmeni lake, drink coffee at the Yacht Club of Greece in Piraeus (ycg.gr), stroll in the shopping district of Glyfada with the luxury stores, such as the Ensayar boutique (ensayar.gr), try the fish dishes of chef Lefteris Lazarou in Mikrolimano at the awarded with one Michelin star Varoulko Seaside restaurant (varoulko.gr). Sunbathe in Yabanaki, in Varkiza beach, or if you’re athletical, enjoy in Anavyssos water sports. For creative seafood dishes, reserve a table in the restaurant Ithaki in Vouliagmeni (ithakirestaurantbar.gr), while for more classic flavours you’ll go to Dourambei in Piraeus (29 Akti Dilaveri, +30 210 4122092). Enjoy the sunset at the temple of Poseidon and pass the night at Island in Varkiza (islandclubrestaurant.gr). And yet there are more things to see…

OUZERI BY PAPAIOANNOU / takes us back in time, when the traditional cafés aka “kafeneiο” and ouzeries aka “ouzadiko” were an integral part of everyday life in Athens. Giorgos Papaioannou continues his “sea journey” together with Restaurateur Dimos Stasinopoulos.

DIVANI ΒY THE SEA / Summers in Athens have a sea feeling; Apollon Beach, located in the most idyllic cove in the Athenian Riviera, in front of the luxury hotel Divani Apollon Palace & Thalasso. In a sublime setting dominated by aqua blue waters and golden sand, just 20 minutes from the city, the aura of the cosmopolitan Athenian Riviera meets the carefree spirit of the Greek summer in an exclusive but naturally minimal setting.

Coyoacan Playa
THE SUNSET AT THE TEMPLE OF POSEIDON IS A MUST SEE, A PLACE WHERE SEA, EARTH AND SKY MINGLE
THE COASTLINE OF ATHENS

DEL POSTO / Unlimited view of the sea, beautiful décor and elegant Mediterranean cuisine characterize the restaurant Del Posto in Vouliagmeni. It is not just a delicious choice, but also an escape from the busy rhythms of the city, entering a fine summer scene. Awarded chef Michalis Ntounetas supervises the menu, emphasizing on fresh prime materials. 4 Poseidonos Ave., Vouliagmeni, +30 21 0967 1770

DODONI CAFÉ / The “divine” ice cream of the company created its own myth! From the small ice cream shop in the centre of Athens (1967), it evolved to an ice cream company based on the triptych: fresh Greek milk, pure materials and divine taste. At Dodoni Café you will also enjoy a full range of coffee and beverages.

COYOACAN PLAYA / The all day seascape experience is here. It has just landed on the coast of Varkiza aiming to make us feel as if we were on a sunny island. The Mexican bar restaurant from the centre of the city goes south to an inviting space inspired by boho elements that create an aesthetic loyal to the Mexican hacienda. Coyoacan is a place where you can satisfy all your senses: spend your day absorbing the warm atmosphere, tasting traditional Mexican gastronomy, drinking unique cocktails and refreshing beverages, while listening to funky music with friends.

CHE COCINA Y BARRA SUDAMERICANA / Latin American maximalism and impressive exotica in the most beautiful all-day bar restaurant in Piraeus, which honours Frida Kahlo. The kitchen is in the hands of Thanos Stassinos, who creates a menu of idiosyncratic fusion, with flavours from Latin America, Japan and Europe. The right place to taste a kaleidoscope of flavours and exotic aromas into a Latin American atmosphere.

PARONTES IN SNFCC / There is always a good reason to visit SNFCC. This time, it is about the photography exhibition, entitled “Parontes” (Presents), by the journalism non profit organization iMEdD, at the perimeter of the Stavros Niarchos Park. The exhibition consists of 43 works of photojournalism captured by reporters and photojournalists, which show everyday life during the lockdown, as well as the return to “normality”. (Until the end of September).
