An album devoted to the six decades of artists visiting Epidaurus, presents unforgettable stories from the courtyard of Leonidas tavern.
Kakia Liakopoulou, present owner of the legendary tavern at Ligourio, revives for us some memories: Melina ordering her honest meal of giouvetsi, Karolos Kuhn nesting in his personal corner, Nikos Kourkoulos and Marianna Latsis exchanging their first love glances, Minotis and Paxinou spending whole evenings there.
An album devoted to the six decades of artists visiting Epidaurus, published by Ellinogermaniki Agogi, presents in two hundred pages of text and photos unforgettable stories from the courtyard of Leonidas. ‘When a light rain started falling during a comedy by Aristophanes’, tells us Kakia Liakopoulou, ‘Lazanis, of the Theatro Technis, improvised by adding a line to his role: “Let’s leave before the rain starts, they are waiting for us at Leonidas” .’
In another performance, Stamatis Kraounakis inserted the name of Leonidas in a song that he had composed, and the tavern owner was deeply moved. ‘He sensed that actors returned to him his smile, his hospitality, all the love he gave to them during so many years.’
These are just a few of the secret sweet moments that first came to the light through the voices of twenty six famous theatre people recorded in this book. Stories brimming with humour and emotion, lived and experienced by themselves in the space of six decades, while they played their part in the performances of classic Theatre of Epidaurus.
